Who are the Kurds?

For most of us in the West, the Kurdish people are almost invisible on the world stage. Yet scattered across the mountains of the Middle East lives one of the largest ethnic nations on earth without a country of its own, numbering over 30 million people.

In the western provinces of Iran, and across Iraq, Turkey, and Syria, the Kurdish people have lived for centuries under the shadow of powerful empires and modern governments. Since the Iranian Revolution of 1979, Kurdish communities have repeatedly faced cruel repression by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), whenever unrest emerges in their regions.

Ancient Roots and Jewish Connections

Few realize that Jewish communities actually lived among the Kurds for over two thousand years. These mountainous regions became home to Jewish populations following the Assyrian conquest of Israel in 722 BC. The Assyrians deported large numbers of Israelites to northern Mesopotamia and surrounding highlands.

As 2 Kings 17:6 states:

“The king of Assyria captured Samaria and carried Israel away to Assyria…”

Many historians believe some of these exiles settled in the mountains that later became Kurdish territory. Over time, they developed a unique culture, adopting Aramaic as their predominant language and other local traditions, and became known historically as “Kurdish Jews.”

After  Israel declared its statehood in 1948, most Kurdish Jews emigrated as part of organized airlifts from Middle Eastern countries. Today, countless Israeli citizens trace their ancestry to these Kurdish communities, and some families still preserve the music, traditions, and cultural practices of Kurdistan.

Modern Kurdish Struggles

Today, Kurdish groups are reportedly cooperating with the United States and Israel in operations targeting the Islamic regime of Iran. This marks a new chapter in a centuries-long struggle: thousands of Kurds have been killed, imprisoned, and executed over the years while seeking a homeland of their own. The IRGC has historically responded with intense brutality whenever unrest arises.

As Matthew 24:7 reminds us:

“For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom…”

Israel and the Kurds: A Strategic Alliance

Despite religious differences—the Kurds being predominantly Muslim—Israel and Kurdish groups share a long history of mutual support. Both peoples have endured threats from hostile regimes and, when possible, have assisted each other in times of crisis.

Biblical and Prophetic Connections

The Kurds are not mentioned by name in Scripture, but their ancestry is traced to ancient peoples of the mountains north and east of Mesopotamia—regions called the mountains of Ararat, Media, and Assyria in the Bible.

As the map above illustrates, Kurdish populations inhabit lands associated with the nations listed in Ezekiel 38:2–6:

• Magog

• Meshech

• Tubal

• Persia

• Gomer

• Beth-Togarmah

Many scholars associate these areas with parts of Russia, Turkey, and Iran. Today, Kurds are spread across Turkey, Iran, Iraq, and Syria, placing them squarely at the crossroads of nations that prophecy identifies as central to last-days events. In essence, the Kurdish homeland sits in the middle of the prophetic staging ground described by Ezekiel.

Strategic and Prophetic Implications

It remains uncertain how deeply Kurdish forces will engage or how effective they will be in challenging the Islamic regime. Some hope they can dilute the power of the IRGC, while others believe their actions could spark a broader internal movement capable of toppling the regime.

Interesting Footnote: Mount Ararat—the resting place of Noah’s Ark (Genesis 8:4)—lies within these very Kurdish regions, linking ancient biblical geography to today’s headlines in yet another compelling way.

Scriptural Anchors for Today

In these troubling times, two passages stand out:

Luke 21:9:

“But when ye shall hear of wars and commotions, be not terrified: for these things must first come to pass…”

Daniel 2:21:

“…He changes the times and the seasons; He removes kings and raises up kings.”

God, who holds tomorrow in His hand, is not surprised by today’s news. Even as the Middle East remains volatile, His sovereign plan continues unshaken.
